Pauline, 28, hopes that by moving to the countryside she will be able to come to terms with the recent death of her husband. Here, she meets François, an introverted man of about her age whose emotional wounds run much deeper than her own. Forever scarred by a childhood tragedy, François lives a prisoner-like existence, guarded night and day by his authoritarian father and intrusive sister. Pauline and François discover a common bond in the fact that they both desperately want to start a new life, but lack the confidence to do so. At first, they find it hard to communicate with one another. But, gradually, they find the words to express their feelings and begin to realise that each has the power to set the other free...

François, a 50-year-old screenwriter whose career is on the decline, cynically ticks the "transgender" box to secure funding for his latest TV series project. When, against all odds, his plan works and his project is accepted, he finds himself having to portray… Françoise, an author beginning her transition. Unable to fulfill the required role, he must team up with Sarah, a real trans writer. As Françoise, François finally achieves success. He fills his bank account and reconnects with his teenage daughter… but as his deception continues, the price to pay proves higher than expected: his truest bonds are forged around his new identity. This is the (shorter) English version of La leçon de cinéma: François Truffaut (1983), a documentary/interview with Truffaut in which he talks about his films and career. It was filmed in 1981 and re-released for Channel 4 in 1989. A fine treat for the admirers of this great director.
